Giants Report Card Pat Shurmur Needs New Motivation Tactics

March 24, 2020

Daniel Jones (28 of 41, 322 yards, 4 TDs) did not throw an interception, lost one fumble (on a backwards pass), had a passer rating of 124.2 and battled his butt off. Good sign for the future. Saquon Barkley (19-64 rushing, 8-79, 1 TD receiving) did not hustle after the ball or knock Devon Kennard out of bounds on the backwards pass. Rookie Darius Slayton abused CB Rashaan Melvin twice for first-half TD catches. LT Nate Solder got crushed by DE Trey Flowers on Jones sack-fumble. At least Jones pounced on the loose ball. Run blocking again suspect. Golden Tate (8-85) had a nice return to Detroit.

Giving up touchdown passes of 41 and 49 yards cannot happen, but it did. Looked like a mental gaffe by rookie CB DeAndre Baker left Michael Thomas on an island he could not escape on the 49-yard TD for Marvin Hall. Baker later did not make a play on ball on Kenny Golladay TD. Matt Stafford had a passer rating of 129.4. At least the work vs. the run was solid (59 yards allowed). Four sacks but not enough pressure and the back end continues to be exploited. Danny Amendola caught all eight passes targeted his way. Another extremely sluggish start.

Aldrick Rosas missed an extra point and is in something of a funk. David Mayo kept alive a Lions drive by running into the kicker on a punt. It was a soft call — punter Sam Martin took a dive — and cost the Giants three points. Rosas also knocked his onside kick attempt out of bounds. Lions smartly sent kickoffs to the goal line, forcing rookie Darius Slayton to make a decision. His first two returns got out to the 19 and 14.

Pat Shurmur opted to go for two down 24-19 with 4:54 left in the second quarter — too early to go that route. What is with these slow starts? Whatever motivational words Shurmur is giving the team before taking the field, change them up, please. James Bettcher’s defense was ravaged by Stafford and should not be getting the ball thrown over the heads of defensive backs.
